YOGA AND AYURVEDA: CREATIVE APPROACHES TO ASANA SEQUENCING - 10 Hours
Taught by Ann Marie Hood
Saturday, January 16 - 10:00am-12:30pm & 1:30pm-4:00pm

Ayurveda is the sister science to and medical aspect of Yoga. Emphasizing the unique physical, emotional and mental constitution of each individual, at its best, Ayurveda offers practioners a framework for self observation which roots subjective experience in the elemental qualities of the created world. It also helps to explain why certain kinds of people are attracted to particular styles of yogasana practice and avoid others.
In this workshop, Ayurveda will be approached as a way of thinking about the world rather than as a set of rules to be learned and applied. Beginning with an interactive discussion of Ayurvedic cosmology, and its relationship to the three \\\"doshas\\\" or aspects of overall constitution, participants will use their own personal experiences as the means to understand the Ayurvedic framework. Once a basic understanding is achieved, the stage is set to view asana practice and sequencing for each dosha in all its creative dimensions. When considered from this point of view, both teaching and personal practice take on a multitude of new possibilities. How does the immediate environment affect each dosha on the mat? Or the time of day when practice occurs?
Is there a way to language one\\\'s teaching to offer something to each dosha? Which postures and techniques are most beneficial or detrimental to each dosha? And in terms of personal practice how can we make sure our practice is actually working for us?

Kundli, is practiced in India through the Vedas and ancient scripts. It is different then what is learned here in the Western world. Not as much emphasis on body movement but on actual awakening and tuning into our Chakras, the subtle energy channels deep within us.
Intense practice of chakras is to awake Kundalini, known as our internal fire or energy. This kundalini fire is to work its way up to the crown chakra. Where you can find the ultimate bliss and peace of life, prosperity and divine wisdom. Through pranayama( breath) and chanting, awake the fire to control life choices, destiny and thought process. This introductory yoga series is offered specifically with the round body in mind. In this class, not only will you have the opportunity to explore yoga in a way that suits your constitution/anatomy best, you will also be able to practice and explore in a comfortable, non-competitive environment in a small group, at a cozy private studio. Classes will include restoration (deep relaxation) practices, gentle yoga and mindful movement.
Absolute beginners welcome along with any other "level." Any size is welcome. This exploration is not about how big or not big, nor how advanced or not advanced, how flexible, nor how strong. Nor is it about weight loss. It is an opportunity to come and begin from where you are, to move your body and quiet your mind in a comfortable, supportive environment.
These classes are intended for beginners and do not include vigorous practices. However, if you have done yoga, this class includes a significant amount of restorative practice--of benefit to anyone--and foundational principles that can be applied to any level of practice. Class size is small enough to accommodate modifications and individual attention. A 1hr-45 minute class length allows for extra time to be spent in relaxation/ restoration practice. As stress is a challenge faced by most, you will also be learning simple tools in this series that can be practiced in day-to-day life to counterpoise stress and its effects.

With this workshop you will learn to build core muscle strength to protect your back from injury and improve your posture. Using the foundations of yoga we will bring awareness to structural and muscular imbalances caused by repetitive strain on specific muscle groups from our active lifestyles or from the stationary tasks of daily life. Working from the ground up, we will focus on specific stretch and strength work to start opening and realigning the body. The practice of yoga acts as a fabulous complement to our daily lifestyle as it fosters unique self-awareness and it significantly reduces the risk of injuries from too much of just one thing.
This course is perfect if you:
Repetitively strain specific muscle groups from running, spinning, tennis or other sports
Sit at a desk, or in a car frequently
Are a new mom working on getting your body back and easing the aches and pains of motherhood
Are interested in enhancing your posture and strengthening your abdominal core while toning.

Give yourself the gift of deep relaxation with this three hour workshop that will leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed and restored. You will learn that deep relaxation is within your reach, and with continued practice, many of the techniques can be applied in everyday life to counterpoise the detrimental effects of stress and the often intense pace we keep.
We will gently move through guided relaxations, simple and supported reclining yoga positions, and easy breathing exercises that together become a long guided meditation. The intent of this workshop is to be relaxing and enjoyable, and the class size is small allowing for personal attention. This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners, yet is beneficial to advanced practitioners alike. NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH YOGA OR MEDITATION IS NECESSARY.
Because continued practice is optimal, you will receive a free CD with three guided relaxations ranging from 5 to 20 minutes to help you have a home practice should you wish to continue. Consider coming to the workshop with a friend, family member or partner, as it is a lovely way to spend quiet time together, and as with many things, continued practice is easier with a 'buddy.' This is the perfect workshop to bring that friend who thinks they can't do yoga!

Join us for a special Mantra meditation workshop with Devamrita Swami, an Urban Monk, Yale graduate and author of several books. He has practiced and shared the knowledge of Mantra meditation in every continent of the world for nearly 40 years and will explain to us how to use these sound vibrations to attain extraordinary states of happiness.
Mantra meditation is a process for reviving our original, pure consciousness through the medium of transcendental sound. Everyone wants to be happy. Some seek happiness through family, career or social life. Others look for it in politics, arts, academia or natural healthy living. All of these endeavors represent our endless quest for satisfaction and pleasure. However, the basic problem in our search for happiness is that the sources of pleasure are limited and temporary. Mantra meditation enables us to expand our pleasure beyond present limitations. Through the mystical power of transcendental sound, inner happiness can be experienced directly because it operates beyond the boundaries of time and space and emanates from the core of our being.
This workshop will enable participants to experience the uplifting power of sublime sound through chanting and singing timeless Sanskrit mantras accompanied by ancient eastern instruments.

When we reduce stress, we improve our health and can start to enjoy more peace and harmony in all aspects of our lives. Ancient teachings as well as modern medicine have shown that we all have the ability to increase the rate of electric flow (vibration) within our bodies and energy systems, and that there is a direct correlation between raising our vibratory rate and our ability to repel disease, increase vitality and raise consciousness. This informative, reflective and interactive workshop offers you a multitude of simple and effective ways to raise your personal vibratory rate within minutes, while providing insights on the connectivity between thoughts, attitudes, behaviours, stress and health. When you increase awareness of yourself, you can transform your life!
Benefits to you:
At the end of this workshop you will have an action plan to raise your personal vibration, and the experiential knowledge that all circumstances can be transformed by raising your vibration, trusting your inner Divine Wisdom and raising your consciousness.

We will begin with a Blissology discussion and flow into an invigorating yet relaxing vinyasa practice that will allow us to feel as good as we possibly can. The Pursuit of Happy Hips: Theory and Vinyasa Practice with Eoin Finn
Monday November 23, 2009 @ Danforth
6 to 9 pm
The energy of the hip area can be alive and vital, or dull and dormant. The hips are the connecting point between the upper and lower body. Furthermore, the hip area is where we experience significant tightness, both from the stresses of our sporting activities as well as from the inactivity of sitting in chairs for many hours in a week. This is more than our ancestors could have imagined possible.
Explore pelvic anatomy and the psychology of the hips. Find out what rules we need to follow to help keep the yoga practice safe and beneficial to our physiology, while also learning how many rules, actually restrict us. Then participate in Eoin’s flowing series of poses that will leave you feeling blissful and ecstatic.
Balance the discipline of a hot and sweaty practice with the chilled West Coast, “play yoga” attitude. This workshop is taught in Eoin’s All levels, All Good Approach, with modifications for beginners and plenty of juiciness for intermediates and advanced yogis. We are talking freedom, baby.

Flow is the essence of our being. It involves being present to every breath that we take and to our collective universal breath. In alignment-based flow yoga we move in a linear synchronicity, patterning our bodies to the alignment of yoga asanas.
While this moving in a linear fashion is incredible learning and discipline, allowing our bodies to gain connectivity for mind, body and spirit, we tend to focus on this disciplined, serious adult learning of movement. We ignore our innate developmental movement patterns, the spiraling, circular forms of movement that are essential to our innate selves. We are also innately attuned to moving from a place of natural intelligence, in a spiraling, ecstatic form of movement that we call “Super flow.”
Drawing inspiration from Yoga, ancient martial arts, dance, surfing, ski and snowboard maneuvers, Super Flow is an ecstatic form of movement. Set to music, it starts off slowly allowing ourselves to feel centered and open in our bodies. Gradually we build up in intensity, spiraling back in touch with the joy of movement.
Superflow is not a replacement of Yoga as we know it, but a powerful complement to the regular yoga practice. It Offers a little more exuberance and a little less introverted energy. It complements static movements with rhythmic flow. You will sweat, release and feel the life force pulsing through you.

YIN YANG YUM ~ Balancing Mobility & Stability at College
Taught by Special Guest Teacher, Cora Wen
Friday, February 19 - 6:45pm-10:15pm
Saturday, February 20 - 6:45pm-10:30pm
Sunday, February 21 - 6:45pm-9:30pm
One of the most important aspects of Yoga is to develop balance in body, mind and spirit. We look for flexibility in the body and mind, while developing strength and stamina to ease through life.
Cora will bring the Chinese wisdom of Yin and Yang into your practice and show the interconnected, interdependent ways to harmonize mobility and stability. A body can be very flexible, but not able to control it, or very strong and stable but not have enough mobility and range.
Yin and Yang are complementary opposites within a greater whole, and everything is both, constantly interacting and collaborating. Cora will show her playful and “sneaky” sequences to show you how to find your Yin Yang YUM Yoga..!
To make use of what is here, you must make use of what is not. ~ Tao Te Ching

Tuning into the anatomical details of the shoulder girdle, arms, wrists and hands. We will encourage our students to feel just as confident while standing on their hands as on their two feet. We will fly upside down to the sky!

We will learn to let the practice evolve out of a deeper sense of embodied consciousness as old ideas dissolve making room for the ancient bliss of freedom yoga to move us in an ever evolving and fresh experience.
Let's explore our habituated ideas and fine tune our awareness as we tap into the gap between what is and what should be - between the program and the potential.

In this workshop, we will examine and discuss the meaning of teaching yoga for us as practitioners as well as potentially challenging issues that can be encountered. We will discuss issues of ethics, personal relationships with students, money, studio policies, livelihood, and other aspects of teaching. The workshop will be interactive and invite input from participants.
There are many disciplines that help us learn to 'let go' and live in the moment. Based on Chinese Yogic principles, Qigong helps us through movement to let go of tension and leave impeding thought behind. Be prepared to have fun. This will be an interactive journey that will leave you laughing, and younger.
